If you have had a miscarriage then your chances of doing well next time are similar to women who have not had a miscarriage. You do not then have a higher risk.

If you have had a miscarriage then your chances of doing well next time are similar to women who have not had a miscarriage. You don't have a higher risk then.

Miscarriages, some figures

If you have miscarried before, there is a good chance that the next pregnancy will also go well:

For women aged 30 who have had 2 miscarriages, 8 out of 10 will go ahead with the next pregnancy.
For women aged 35 who have had 2 miscarriages, 7 out of 10 will go ahead with the next pregnancy.
The midwife or doctor will discuss with you whether further testing is advisable.
If you have had 2 or more miscarriages, your family doctor or midwife may refer you to a hospital. Possible causes include chromosomal abnormalities, hormone disorders or an abnormality of the uterus.


Only in 15-20% of couples is a cause found for the occurrence of repeated miscarriages. If no cause is found, the chances of carrying the next pregnancy to term are fortunately still relatively high.

Perhaps you can use your lifestyle to reduce your chances of having another miscarriage. Discuss with your doctor or midwife what you can change, for example, stop lactating, take medication or lose weight.
