CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) formula.
The MDRD formula and eGFR are tests to assess how well your kidneys are working. They measure kidney function by looking at creatinine in your blood. Low GFR values, e.g., below 60 ml/min/1.73m², can indicate kidney problems. It's important to identify kidney problems early because you won't notice them at first.
KD-EPI formula (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) is a formula for calculating estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
This is a measure of kidney function and is often used to assess the severity of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) is a measurement to understand how well your kidneys are working. It tells you how efficiently your kidneys filter waste products from your blood.
MDRD formula is a mathematical method to estimate eGFR. It takes into account several factors such as age, gender, race and the amount of creatinine in your blood.
The difference between the two is that eGFR is the outcome, such as 80 ml/min/1.73m², which tells you how well your kidneys are working. MDRD is a formula used by the laboratory of Blood Value Testing to calculate eGFR.
When you know your eGFR value, you can keep an eye on how healthy their kidneys are. A low eGFR value can indicate kidney problems. This test is important because kidney problems often start insidiously, and with early detection, serious kidney disease can be prevented or delayed.
Most check-ups include creatinine, which is always calculated with the GFR (MDRD formula) for FREE. The reference values depend on age and gender.
The result may then look like this:
Method Result Reference value
creatinine ENZ 86.6 μmol/l 59.2 - 103.4
GFR (MDRD formula) 89.1 ml/min/1.73m² > 60.0
The result for this gentleman with this gender and age is good if it is above 60, so in his case it is good because his result is 89.
Limitations: Not all formulas are suitable for everyone, for example, not for young people, people with specific conditions, or pregnant women.
For whom does this formula not apply?
The MDRD formula is not calibrated for:
- people under 18 years of age
- people with a highly abnormal body surface
- ethnic groups other than white or negroid
- patients with muscular diseases, paraplegia or quadriplegia
- patients with acute renal insufficiency
- malnourished people
- people with a vegetarian diet
- pregnant women
The CKD-EPI formula is as reliable as the MDRD formula, but is more accurate in patients with relatively good renal function. At GFR 60-90 ml/min, the results of the CKD-EPI formula are closer to the actual GFR than those of the MDRD formula. as of January 1, 2022, we will use this new formula
