BUN Nitrogen test of blood urea and creatinine
This test consists of:
- Urea
- Creatinine
Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test
With this you can calculate BUN.
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs responsible for filtering blood and waste products. One method to determine how well your kidneys filter is to measure the waste product urea using blood urea nitrogen test (BUN).
This quick and easy blood test allows you to measure if you are eating too much protein, not drinking enough or if your liver is not working properly.
When your liver filters protein, it releases urea nitrogen as a waste product. The kidneys filter the urea nitrogen out of your blood and carry it to your urine.
If a BUN test gives higher than normal values, your kidneys may not be working as well or as effectively as they should.
The BUN test can also be used to determine how effectively dialysis functions as an artificial kidney.
The typical ratio of BUN to creatinine in your blood is 10:1 to 20:1, according to the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. (AACC)
the BUN tcan be used to detect:
- liver damage
- malnutrition
- excessive intake of protein
- poor circulation
- dehydration
- urinary tract obstruction
- Whether the heart can still pump the blood around properly
- gastrointestinal bleeding
Pregnancy can also give higher BUN values.
