Coenzyme Q10 (Ubichinon)
This test measures Coenzyme Q10 (Ubichinone) in blood.
Coenzyme Q10 is found in every cell in the body. The fat-soluble substance is also called ubiquinone, which freely translated means something like "present everywhere. Without coenzyme Q10, energy formation in the cell is not possible and the cell dies.
Primarily, coenzyme Q10 acts as a co-factor in oxidative phosphorylation (cellular respiration) in the mitochondria, the cellular 'energy power plants'. In addition, coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant and radical scavenger, helps keep cellular membranes flexible and prevents lipid peroxidation in these membranes.
Coenzyme Q10 is of great importance for the vitality of tissues and organs.
For example, sufficient Q10 can help prevent heart failure. But also in case of chronic fatigue, chronic pain, diabetes or osteoarthritis Q10 can play a supporting role.
