DHEA
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone)
The difference between DHEA and DHEA-S, is that DHEA-S has an additional sulfate molecule attached. DHEA-S is a steroid androgen present in both men and women. The body can convert DHEA-S into DHEA with an enzyme called steroid sulfatase. The body can also reverse this process and change DHEA back into DHEA-S.
DHEA is produced in the ovaries, testes and adrenal glands. The body changes the hormone DHEA into the hormone androstenendione. the body then converts androstenendione into the major female and male hormones. The levels of DHEA change as one ages.
DHEA-S contains a sulfate molecule with one sulfur and four oxygen atoms attached. Over 90% of the DHEA in your bloodstream exists in the form of DHEA-S.
Your body produces DHEA mainly in the morning hours, and your kidneys quickly excrete this DHEA. DHEA-S, however, stays in the body much longer. For this reason, doctors use DHEAS levels to determine the blood level of DHEA in your body.
DHEA has a number of benefits for your overall health. According to the book "DHEA in Human Health and Aging," DHEA supplementation can help treat depression and improve overall mental clarity and wellness. In addition, DHEA can help treat erectile dysfunction, osteoporosis, Addison's disease, obesity, and increase muscle mass and improve physical performance. However, clinical research has not confirmed these benefits of DHEA. It is best to consult a medical professional prior to taking DHEA supplements.
Please note DHEA fluctuates during the day, To determine the DHEA level in your body you should order the test DHEA-S.
