An HPV PCR test measures the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) genetic material (DNA) in a sample.

• The test detects the presence of HPV DNA in the sample, indicating active infection with the virus.
• A sample for an HPV PCR test is obtained by taking a smear from the cervix.
• The PCR technique is highly sensitive and accurate, allowing detection of even small amounts of viral DNA.

Results:

• A positive result for a high-risk HPV type may lead to further investigation by a physician or specialist.
• A negative result means that no detectable amount of the virus is present at the time of testing.
