IGF-BP3 Growth Hormone
IGF-BP3 from blood (serum).
There are sources that claim IGF-BP3 is a better measure to determine/estimate HGH (human growth hormone) than IGF-1.
However, this test is usually used only when IGF-1 is not sufficiently clear.
IGF-BP3 is useful in combination with IGF-1.
IGFBP-3 Test (Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3)
Synonyms: Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3, IGF-Binding Protein 3
Method: CLIA (Chemiluminescence Assay)
this test is used in regular care in children, Blood Values Test cannot perform blood tests in children (incapacitated) without a doctor's referral due to legislation.
Increased: Acromegaly, large stature in children, early puberty.
Decreased: Insufficiency of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, small stature, growth retardation, fasting, malabsorption, chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
The IGFBP-3 study can also be used in adults, mainly in the following situations:
Diagnosis and Monitoring of Acromegaly: Acromegaly is a condition caused by overproduction of growth hormone (GH) in adults, usually due to a benign tumor in the pituitary gland. The increased level of growth hormone leads to an increase in IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 in the blood. Measuring IGFBP-3 can help diagnose and monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
Evaluation of Hypopituitarism: This is a condition in which the pituitary gland does not produce enough hormones, including growth hormone. Reduced levels of IGFBP-3 may indicate growth hormone deficiency in adults, which can lead to decreased muscle mass, energy and quality of life.
Assessment of Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) in Adults: Adults with symptoms of GHD, such as fatigue, decreased muscle mass and strength, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease, may benefit from IGFBP-3 testing as part of a comprehensive evaluation.
Investigating Causes of Unexplained Growth Problems or Body Composition Changes: In adults experiencing unexplained changes in body composition, such as increased fat mass despite healthy diet and regular exercise, an IGFBP-3 test can provide insight into hormonal status.
Monitoring Treatment: For adults undergoing treatment for conditions affecting the growth hormone system, the IGFBP-3 test may be useful to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and guide any adjustments in therapy.
The use of IGFBP-3 blood test, as a diagnostic tool in adults should be part of a comprehensive evaluation, including clinical assessment and possibly other laboratory tests, to make an accurate diagnosis. If the above conditions or symptoms are suspected, it is advisable to seek medical advice for appropriate investigation and treatment.
