Potassium is a positively charged particle (ion) normally present in low concentration in the blood along with other particles such as sodium and chloride. It is also referred to as "electrolytes" when talking about these particles/ions. Electrolytes maintain the amount of water and acidity (pH) of the body. Potassium is also very important for proper muscle function.
Most potassium is found in the cells of the body. About 2% is only present in body fluids, including the blood. Because there is so little potassium in the blood, small changes often have major consequences. Too much or too little potassium can be dangerous, as it can cause shock, breathing difficulties or cardiac arrhythmias.
