Progesterone is the female sex hormone that is produced from ovulation to menstruation and during pregnancy. A persistently low progesterone indicates that there are no ovulations.
About Progesterone
Progesterone is a calming hormone. It calms the central nervous system and provides serenity. It is important that estrogen and progesterone are in balance with each other. If there is no balance between the two, there is disruption of the menstrual cycle, as well as other problems that reduce quality of life, such as energy problems.
Too little progesterone relative to estrogen can show symptoms such as:
- Irritability
- Fears
- Nervousness
- Hyper-emotional
- Shallow and restless sleep
- Painfully swollen breasts
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Excessive menstruation
- Headaches before menstruation
As a result you get a number. The value of this number should be related to which phase of the cycle you are in.
For the four different phases the following separate reference values apply:
- follicular 0.19 - 2.83 nmol/l (follicular phase)
- mid-luteal 0.38 - 38.20 nmol/l (ovulation phase)
- luteal 5.82 - 76.00 nmol/l (luteal phase)
- post-menopausal <0.41 nmol/l
