SHBG (sex hormone)
Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) from serum.
To determine the amount of free (bioavailable) testosterone.
This test is used in particular to demonstrate excessive activity of male sex hormone, or in women (for cycle disorders and/or excessive hair growth) where total testosterone determination does not always reflect bioactive (free) testosterone.
Elevated
If SHBG is elevated, there is probably less testosterone freely available than expected based on the total testosterone test
Lowered
When SHBG is decreased, more likely than not, more testosterone is freely available than expected based on the total testosterone test.
