STD Multiplex - PCR Panel Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis is a common vaginal condition in women. It is important to note that bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD), although it is sometimes confused with STDs because of similar symptoms.
This panel is used to detect the presence of certain bacteria in women's vaginal flora. This panel contains several bacteria commonly associated with bacterial vaginosis.
Lactobacillus spp.: Lactobacillus bacteria are normally present in the vagina and play a crucial role in maintaining healthy vaginal flora. They produce lactic acid, which keeps the acidity (pH) of the vagina low and helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.
Gardnerella vaginalis: This is one of the bacteria often associated with bacterial vaginosis. When the number of Gardnerella bacteria increases, it can lead to an imbalance in the vaginal flora.
Atopobium vaginae: Like Gardnerella, Atopobium vaginae can contribute to the development of bacterial vaginosis when the population increases.
BVAB2 (Bacterial vaginosis-associated bacteria 2): BVAB2 is a group of bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis. They thrive in an environment with elevated pH.
Megasphaera type 1: These bacteria are also associated with bacterial vaginosis and thrive in a less acidic environment.
Mobiluncus spp.: Mobiluncus bacteria are another type of bacteria commonly found in women with bacterial vaginosis.
Bacteroides fragilis: Although Bacteroides bacteria are usually found in the gut, in some cases they can also be found in the vagina, especially in women with bacterial vaginosis.
A "score" is also measured here. A higher score may indicate a greater imbalance of vaginal flora and a greater risk of bacterial vaginosis.
Bacterial vaginosis can cause symptoms such as an unpleasant vaginal odor, abnormal vaginal discharge and sometimes itching or irritation. If you suspect you have bacterial vaginosis, it is important to seek medical attention because it can lead to complications if left untreated. Treatment usually includes antibiotics to restore the imbalance of vaginal flora.
Sampling:
a. For women: gently separate the labia and swab over the infected or suspicious areas. Rotate the swab around and let it rest on the site for a few seconds to collect sufficient sample.
b. For men: Roll back the foreskin and swab over the infected or suspicious areas. Rotate the swab around and leave it in place for several seconds to collect sufficient sample.
Place the swab in the transport tube: carefully place the used swab in the transport tube that already contains the appropriate medium to preserve the sample. Make sure the swab is completely placed in the tube and seal it tightly. Send the sample to the laboratory according to the instructions
A PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test can also be performed on a urine sample. Using urine as a sample can be convenient, especially if genital herpes symptoms are not present at the time or are difficult to access with a swab
Sample collection: You should prepare to collect a clean urine sample. First morning urine is often recommended because it is more concentrated.
You must provide your own urine collection container or urine jar to collect a sample. The container must be clean and sterile.
You must open the container and urinate in the container without touching the inside of the container or the outside of the container.
Then fill the shipping tube for urine as in the included instructions or the instruction video from Blood Value Test.
It is important to work accurately and follow proper procedures to maintain sample integrity and ensure the reliability of PCR test results. If you are unsure of the procedure, consult with a medical professional at Bloedwaardentest.co.uk
It is important to note that these STDs can cause various symptoms and complications, and early detection and treatment are essential to avoid serious consequences. Safe sex and regular screening for STDs can help prevent and timely identify these infections.
This test is generally preferred for swab collection.
