I wrapped the tick in tape anyway, can the tick still be examined?
Our advice would be to send the tick anyway and not to remove the tape yourself. In case the tick cannot be examined, we will contact you and there is no examination fee.
When will I get the results of the tick?
After payment, the examination takes about 10 to 20 working days, but due to any additional checks, the examination may take a little longer. We cannot start the examination until payment is received. You will receive the results of the examination by e-mail.
Does it matter if the tick is still alive?
No, the tick does not have to be alive. you can always send the tick for examination.
How long can I keep the tick before I send it in?
In principle, we can always examine the tick. This is because it is an examination of the DNA of the bacteria.
The tick is infected, now what?
In the first instance, contact your (family) physician or look for a doctor at www.avig.nl. If the Borrelia bacterium has been detected, you can request a blood test to see if the bacterium has been transmitted.
The tick is very small, can it be examined?
Yes, the size of the tick does not matter.
The tick has not sucked itself full, does examination still make sense?
You can have the tick examined just to be sure. Keep a close eye on the spot and contact your doctor to be sure.
How reliable are tick test results?
If the test is positive, the bacteria are 99% certain to be found. If the test is negative, this does not mean to rule out a possible infection. Keep a close eye on the spot and contact your doctor if you don't trust it.
The tick is infected, should I have a blood test done now?
yes it makes sense to also monitor the blood after/during your treatment https://www.bloodtesting.nl/ziekte-van-lyme-borrelia-igg-en-igm.html
It tests for Borrelia burgdorferi. This is the causative agent of borreliosis; popularly known as "Lyme disease."
This is a tick-borne disease transmitted by an infected tick and can cause symptoms such as:
- A red or reddish-blue spot that grows larger.
- In darker skin, the spot may be yellowish or bluish.
- With such a spot, it is almost certain that you have Lyme. immediately start treatment at your doctor's office with antibiotics.
Other symptoms of Lyme include:
- flu-like symptoms (fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue)
- pain,
- less strength in arms, legs or trunk,
- tingling,
- pain in one or more joints.
The immune response may be slow to emerge: on average, blood tests will not show anything until 3 - 6 weeks after infection. The presence of Borrelia antibodies (IgG) in the blood need not be evidence of a current or active infection; it may be the residue of a past (symptomatic or not) and no longer active Borrelia infection.
So it makes sense to have the tick, should you have it in your possession, immediately tested for Borrelia Burgdorferi.
