Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZPP)
Zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP or ZnPP) from EDTA blood (purple tube) code ZPP Add additional tube separately for this purpose.
Blood test to look further if there is something wrong with the iron metabolism
If anemia is diagnosed, Transferrin and Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZZP) can be used to determine the cause of the iron deficiency.
The test determines the amount of zinc protoporphyrin in the blood. This shows whether the production of haem is going well. Haem is a building block for haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that is responsible for the transport of oxygen. This oxygen transport requires iron, which must be built in during the production of haem. When there is not enough iron available, zinc is incorporated instead of iron. Hemoglobin made with haem-zinc (instead of haem-iron) does not function because zinc cannot transport oxygen.
